_______________

How to evoke the sordid without propagating its disease? Mexico is a country forged in collisionβ€”where conquest and resistance shaped not justΒ history, but the very fabric of identity. La Guerra contra el Narco looms largeβ€”an unwinnable war declared in 2006, leaving nearly 400,000 dead and over 60,000 missing. A faceless catastrophe, where victims blur into statistics, where the violence is too vast to frame in a single image.
In this series, I explore Mexico’s most enduring contemporary strugglesβ€”tests of resilience and testaments of resistance. Ritual and surrealist traditions become a shield against violence. With the same alchemical elegance, I have chosen photography and poetryβ€”mediums that render the message almost imperceptible, yet, in their beauty, even more powerful. An act of defiance. A way to reclaim power.
Balloon, Cage, Gravity
The impossibility of flight.
Sad little girl, little bird, little boy…
Dreamingβ€”floatingβ€”falling.
Violence in Mexico does not discriminateβ€”it begins in childhood, shaping the way grief is inherited. The cage, the balloon, the weight of gravityβ€”the metaphors repeat themselves across generations, in different forms, in different faces.
The ofrenda, the personal shrine, is no longer reserved for DΓa de los Muertosβ€”it has become a permanent fixture in households, a silent monument to the missing and the murdered.
How many mothers created altars like this, missing a tomb? How many children growΒ up knowing their fathers through stories told inΒ contained tears?
Absence,
it is grief, behind the glass,
her boy's name carved in stone.
She embraces him now
β€”with her eyes.
